School qualifications

"Allgemeine Hochschulreife"

You can pursue further education at a university or Fachhochschule if you have an Abitur. Generally, this is completed at a state or state-recognized “Gymnasium” [grammar school/academic high school]. However, there are also other options for completing the qualifications required to study at university (e.g. night school or Waldorf schools).

"Fachgebundene Hochschulreife"

“Fachgebundene Hochschulreife” is when you have a vocational or subject-specific qualification that entitles you to pursue any course of study at a Fachochschule or certain courses of study at a university.

"Fachhochschulreife"

“Fachhochschulreife” is generally attained by graduates of Fachoberschulen [technical colleges] or the Telekolleg II. However, under certain conditions, this can also be attained with qualifications from Berufsfachschulen [vocational colleges], Fachschulen [technical schools] or other institutions. Gymnasium students who have successfully completed their 12th year of school can attain Fachhochschulreife in conjunction with a completed, year-long internship or a successfully completed vocational training course.

Admission to the Bachelor degree courses, offered as on-campus, dual-study options, is also possible for people who have fulfilled the academic requirements for the Fachhochschulreife. In such cases, prospective students must present certificates to evidence completion of the academic requirements and a contract for cooperation with one of the companies affiliates with the university.

If you first complete an internship or professional training course that forms the requirements for Fachhochschulreife after the enrollment deadline, we require evidence that the internship or training will be completed before lectures start (see the current semester schedule). The final certificate of entitlement to a university education must then be submitted by the time that lectures begin. If this is not possible, we must revoke your enrollment.

  • Evidence of a relevant, 6-month internship after completing your Berufskolleg educationor
  • Evidence of a completed Berufsausbildung [vocational training course] - this can be either before or after attending the Berufskolleg and must not be in a related subject or
  • A certificate that is recognized in all German states

"Meister" or "Techniker"
